The role of working memory for language

Working memory is a representational medium for holding and manipulating information that is relevant for our current thoughts and actions. What is the role of working memory in learning a language, and in speaking and understanding it? I will address these questions from the perspective of the cognitive psychology of language. In the first part, I will give an overview of recent research on human working memory, with a focus on the mechanisms of maintenance that I think might be important for language processing. In the second part, I will present research that speaks to the role of working memory for language learning and language processing.
