An international team of researchers, including department members Balthasar Bickel and Martin Meyer and led by Sebastian Sauppe, published a new paper in Brain and Language, entitled "Cross-linguistic differences in case marking shape neural power dynamics and gaze behavior during sentence planning".

This paper reports a novel combined eye tracking and EEG experiment on sentence planning in Basque and Swiss German. The authors find that differences in how agent arguments are marked b case in these languages shapes how speakers prepare to speak when describing various pictures. These planning differences are reflected in neural power changes in the theta, alpha and beta bands, and also in the time course of visual attention to pictures and speech onset latencies.
