Crosslinguistic corpus studies in linguistic typology

Schnell, S. & Schiborr, N. N. (2022).
Annual Review of Linguistics 8, 171-191.

The article reviews corpus-linguistic research in typological linguistics. While recent studies are based for the most part on larger, mostly written corpora (e.g. UDs or a number of parallel text corpora like Bible translations), we highlight the relevance of spoken language corpora from language documentations. We include a comparative case study revealing drastic differences in phrase length between written and spoken corpora, potentially attenuating the role of DLM, and a case study on zero anaphors confirming the central role of same-function anaphoric chains and tremendous cross-linguistic variation within this context.
