Department of Comparative Language Science

Chapters co-authored by lab member Stefan Schnell

Alongside an outline of Multi-CAST, a multilingual corpus of spoken texts developed specifically for typological studies in reference and argument structure, the chapter contains two case studies: one demonstrates the uniformity of referential information in the form of full lexical expressions across corpora from diverse languages that suggests hitherto unnoticed regularities of informational density in discourse production. The second case studies calls into question a direct link between frequencies of event participant features (humanness, definiteness, person) in language use and the distribution of differential argument marking across languages.
