In the paper "Getting Creative: A Language Modeling Approach to Predicting Child Utterances in 12 Typologically Diverse Languages" we explore the development of surface patterns in child and child directed speech. Our findings indicate that children rely on strict surface patterns that are combined in increasingly creative ways.
