Cheryl Gilford, MSc
PhD Student
Evolutionary Neuroscience of Language Group
I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Comparative Language Science at the University of Zurich, working as part of the NCCR Evolving Language group. I hold a BSc (Hons.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and an MSc in Neuroscience and Neurotechnology from the University of Malta.
My passion for understanding the brain and my interest in linguistics have led me to pursue this PhD, where I focus on exploring the neural implementation of hierarchical linguistic structures, particularly how syntax is processed in the brain. My research also involves developing and comparing neurobiological models of syntax, with a special emphasis on how these models align with other neuro-cognitive frameworks, such as action planning.
Through the use of advanced neuroimaging techniques, data analysis, and signal processing, I aim to shed light on the intricate neural mechanisms that underpin language and cognitive function.
